Author Talk: Titanic Valour, Titanic’s Fifth Officer Harold Lowe by Inger Sheil

Saturday, 30 July 2022 | 11am - 12:30pm | Liverpool | General

Inger Sheil’s fascination with maritime history began in childhood at her family home on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. Her father’s stories of seeing the Aquitania and Queen Mary in Sydney as troopships during World War 2 and her mother’s experiences on the Queen Mary’s final passenger crossing sparked an interest in the great liners.

Inger has researched the Titanic for more than 25 years and spent five years in the United Kingdom delving into material for her first book, a biography of Harold Lowe titled Titanic Valour (The History Press UK, 2012). She has written many articles on the mercantile marine and the golden age of ocean liner travel, worked on Titanic exhibitions and loaned collection items, and is frequently invited to lecture or speak to the media on the subject.

She has appeared in and advised on several documentaries, most recently Titanic: Stories from the Deep (2019).

In 2012 she sailed on the Titanic Memorial Cruise from Southampton to New York to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

Inger is currently working on her second book, a look at the world of the deck officers of RMS Titanic and their role in the disaster. She has worked at the Australian National Maritime Museum, currently in the role of Assistant Curator, and as a keen scuba diver has visited notable wrecks such as the SS Yongala. When on dry land she enjoys collecting vintage and antique clothing, listening to early ragtime and jazz, and experimenting with prohibition-era cocktail recipes.
