Amar Singh Our Local Hero: My story, My journey ages 16+

Saturday, 03 February 2024 | 11am - 12:30pm | Liverpool | General

Amar Singh is the president and founder of the charity Turbans 4 Australia. Since 2015, he and his team have been providing support to Australians from all walks of life, while promoting multiculturalism and religious tolerance.  At age 15 Amar and his family immigrated to Australia from India.  While attending a local Campbelltown high school in the late 90s he started volunteering and helping the community by participating in the Red Shield Door Knock appeal.

Amar cites volunteering at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games as one of the greatest experiences of his life. "Volunteering was my way of making new friends, fitting in and learning". I love sport, but most of all I loved being part of a team, representing diversity and saying to the rest of the world, 'This is what Australians are: That's what Australians are; we come from all different backgrounds".

Amar founded Turbans 4 Australia in 2015, after experiencing racial slurs because of his turban and beard. He wanted Australians to see Sikhs for who they really are, as people they can trust in times of need, so he created the organisation to promote multiculturalism and compassion through their charity work.

"What better way to teach others about my community and my faith than through charity work?"

Turbans 4 Australia's amazing team of volunteers have worked tirelessly to help hundreds of thousands of Australians in need. From those affected by natural disasters such as floods, bushfires and cyclones, to those facing homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, unemployment and isolation. By building relationships with people from all walks of life, they break down barriers of fear and misunderstanding while upholding the core Sikh values of equality, respect and service to humanity.

For his work Amar has been awarded
